Internal Hub Kit Installation Apr 24, 2024

Front Hub Motor

This video shows the entire installation process using a front Magic Pie 5 motor kit. The process is the same for the Smart Pie. If you have a Magic Pie Edge wheel, it should be installed in the opposite direction, with the controller on the right/drive side of the bike.

Before installing your wheel, make sure that none of the spokes are loose; you can tighten them with a spoke wrench or pliers.

Take a look at our selection of hub motors.

Tools you will need:

  • Allen key set
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Phillip screwdriver
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Tire Removal Tools
  • Spoke Wrench

Rear Hub Motor

Installing the rear hub motor is similar to installing the front hub motor, with some additional steps.

This video shows the entire installation process using a rear Magic Pie 5 motor kit. The process is the same for the Smart Pie. If you have a Magic Pie Edge wheel, it should be installed in the opposite direction, with the controller on the right/drive side of the bike. The video also shows how to install a freewheel on the hub.

Before installing your wheel, make sure that none of the spokes are loose; you can tighten them with a spoke wrench or pliers.

Pedelec Sensor (PAS)

A pedelec sensor can be installed on the bike and connected to the motor hub kit for automatic pedal assistance. If you are installing the pedelec sensor with a Cycle Analyst (for better performance) take a look at this article, otherwise, continue reading.

The pedelec sensor bracket fixes onto the bottom bracket assembly and the magnet ring slips over the bottom bracket pedal shaft (the arrows should point in the direction of the pedal movement).

The black, red, and yellow wires at the end of the pedelec sensor cable need to connect to the black, red, and yellow unterminated wires on the motor wire harness. The blue wire on the motor wire harness is for reverse and can be sealed off if you don’t need it. These wires are in the unterminated cable near the motor, not the unterminated cable farther from the motor (which is for light/horn).

The pedelec wires can either be soldered directly to the respective motor wires, or you can fit a suitable 3-pin inline connector to allow the rear wheel to be removed more easily to replace inner tubes or tires etc. Once the wires are connected by colour, carefully insulate them from each other and try and make the joint as waterproof as possible. If your pedelec sensor has a yellow wire instead of a green wire, you can simply connect green to yellow.

You can configure the pedal assist settings on the smart display.
